Vehicle insurance is one of the most popular types of property insurance in Poland. Most of us opt for various forms of coverage, knowing that it’s worth being prepared for any situation. Even if you already have mandatory liability insurance (OC) and think that’s probably all you need – you’re wrong. It’s worth considering additional coverage that will let you sleep soundly and not worry about unforeseen incidents on the road.
Vehicle Insurance – what you need to know
Among motor insurance policies, there are several basic types. The most popular and also the mandatory one is third-party liability insurance (OC). This is civil liability insurance for motor vehicle owners, required by law for every registered vehicle in Poland.
Thanks to it, in the event of a collision or accident caused by the driver, the injured parties receive financial compensation from the at-fault driver’s policy. The vehicle owner is required not only to take out an insurance policy. They have to also ensure continuous coverage. Which means there must be no gap – not even a single day – between successive policies.
You must purchase OC no later than the date of the vehicle’s initial registration. And when buying a used car, make sure it is still insured. A standard OC policy is valid for 12 months. As a rule, it is automatically renewed, with certain exceptions (e.g. if the previous owner sold the vehicle or the premium was not paid in full).
Failure to maintain valid OC results in a severe financial penalty imposed by the Insurance Guarantee Fund (UFG). This is indisputable.
Voluntary Vehicle Insurance
The second most popular product is comprehensive auto insurance (AC) – a voluntary policy that drivers often purchase as part of a package with OC. It protects the owner against the costs of repairs or the loss of the vehicle as a result of theft, damage, fire, or natural disasters.
Among other types of insurance policies, the following are quite popular:
- ”NNW” – accident insurance, which provides financial compensation in the event of injury or death of the driver or passengers.
- Assistance – providing help in the event of a breakdown or accident. It includes towing, on-site repairs, and, in some plans, a replacement vehicle or accommodations.
What to look for
When purchasing motor insurance, it’s important to consider not only the price, but also the scope of coverage. Crucial is how well the policy is tailored to the driver’s individual needs. In the case of OC, however, the scope of coverage is defined by law. It is the same across all insurers, so you can confidently purchase the cheapest policy here. It will be no different from the most expensive one.
When it comes to AC, NNW, or Assistance, the differences in coverage can be significant. This is something you should pay particular attention to! The insurer’s reputation and customer reviews are also important. These policies apply only to you and the benefits are paid out to you. So, it’s worth knowing whether a particular insurer causes problems when it comes to paying out claims.
To avoid potential problems with voluntary motor insurance, it is very important to review the General Terms and Conditions of the Policy (OWU). That is where the insurance company is required to specify the exact scope of coverage, as well as any exclusions. Sometimes, a broad scope of coverage may be of little value if there are also a large number of exclusions.
What else is worth keeping in mind?
The scope of coverage is particularly important for AC. Also, it’s worth checking the following when purchasing AC:
- does it cover vehicle theft,
- what is the deductible for the claim (specified as a fixed amount or a percentage),
- what is the sum insured, and is it fixed or variable?
- is there such a thing as “part depreciation,”
- does the coverage include damages incurred abroad,
- and what the insurer’s liability exclusions are.
The broader the coverage, the higher the premium, but at the same time, the greater the protection in the event of unforeseen circumstances.
